How He Wears It with Jalil Johnson

HOW HE WEARS IT
with Jalil Johnson

In the old days of style blogging and the original moment of the traditional influencer, it would sometimes seem like a new muse popped up weekly and was suddenly everywhere. It was a time when the idea of dressing for a wider audience was somewhat novel. Those who first burst on the scene (Susie Bubble, Leandra Medine, Tavi Gevinson, or Bryan Boy, for instance) came seemingly out of nowhere with a wholly unique and fully realized point of view on personal style that would transform the entire industry. Now, everyone seems to be a bit of a star in their own corner of the internet, and it's becoming harder and harder to suss out true originals or eclectics. Jalil Johnson is just such a wonderful person. His presence in the larger style sphere is undeniable, and his joyful approach to dressing (which he covers in his newsletter, Consider Yourself Cultured) is truly inspiring. Jalil got his start assisting stylists (while finishing university, "There were days when I’d be on set steaming and dressing models while simultaneously attending seminars via Zoom!"). Before he went on to secure a role in Sak's Fashion Office under Roopal Patel, Jalil had his hand in everything from styling to assisting the buyers and creating trend reports. He just left his post to go out on his own, working one-on-one with private styling clients and continuing to build out his substack.

In a full circle moment, back to the start of style influencers, our friend Tommy Ton and I met up with Jalil one afternoon this spring to see his spin on some of our most beloved pieces, including our Pearl Collection, which features Jalil’s birthstone, pearls!

PEARLS, PEARLS, PEARLS!
Layer them, wear them on their own, hang them from a brooch

Our Pearl Collection has been designed to wear the pieces interchangeably - layer our Akoya necklaces together, throw them on with an Akoya tassel, wear our South Sea Pearl Huggies, or hang our pearl pendant from our new brooches. Wearing the iconic Loewe dress with a vintage, oversized Tuxedo jacket with a nod to the roaring twenties (with the layering of the long pearl necklace), Jalil breaks up his silhouette with our small, round Akoya's in 16" and 32". And, fashioning our Diamond Pin (like the shoulder brooches of the mid 20's and 30's), Jalil dons this brooch just below his shoulder, inspiring us to mix Diamonds, pearls, and tassels in a unique and aspirational way.

A PEARL AND GOLD STACK
Finding what pieces stack best for you

Our Pearls are hand-picked for their high luster, perfect roundness, or unique Baroque or Drop shape, size, and scale. Adding pops of color in fun and unexpected ways is something we love about Jalil. Wearing his Dries feathered skirt with a crisp poplin shirt and Tory Burch satin coat, Jalil mixes color and texture in ways that get us excited about dressing up. Stacking pearls with gold, Jalil pairs our pearl rings with our textured gold and high-polished gold chunky rings. And, to add a touch of shine and movement, Jalil wears our Pearl Huggies (which can be worn with the pearl drops or just on their own as small hoops).

TAHITIAN PEARLS
In all shapes and sizes

We've always loved Tahitian Pearls, which range in all shades of Peacock—a mix of pink, purple, blue, green, and black. Jalil layers on the Tahitians, creating multiple points of interest. It's a vibe, and it's evident how Jalil shares how he mixes it all in aspirational ways!
